Bakersfield, California – Event Preview

The Flowmaster NMCA WEST season opens June 22 with a three-day event at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif. The Inaugural Lucas Oil NMCA WEST Street Car Nationals will run June 22-24, 2012. Racers from across the West will converge on the legendary drag strip in hopes of taking home a coveted Wally trophy, named for NHRA founder Wally Parks. Competitors in 10 classes, including the six-second 240 mph Garrett Turbo Pro Street cars, will chase points toward a year-end prize and the title of World Champion.

The NMCA WEST weekend at Famoso Raceway offers entertainment off the track as well. Race fans can enjoy a spectacular car show featuring makes and models of all kinds with 50 awards slated to be given out each day. Anyone in the market for parts for their own car can visit the Manufacturers Midway where they can see and purchase parts from the hottest aftermarket manufacturers with experts on hand to answer questions. Or, for anyone looking for that hard-to-find piece or wanting to score a great bargain, there’s always the Swap Meet. And, last but not least, there’s NMCA’s famous Burnout Contest. Spectators can sign up to participate and walk away with prizes and all-important bragging rights.

Opened in the 1950s, Famoso Raceway is the home of the famed March Meet. NMCA WEST participants will be racing down the same quarter-mile as drag racing luminaries like “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, Connie Kalitta, Tom “Mongoose” McEwen and Don “The Snake” Prudhomme.

NMCA WEST racers will continue the four-race series Aug. 17-19 in Pomona, Calif., at the world famous Auto Club Raceway at Pomona where race fans can see the only racing action at the facility outside of NHRA’s two national events. Next, the series heads to SpeedWorld Dragstrip in Phoenix, Sept. 21-23, before hitting the strip at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Calif., Oct. 19-21, for the NMCA WEST World Finals.

The TREMEC True Street class has always been a racer favorite, with awards given out to the racers closest to each second increment, along with the overall quickest car and the runner-up, after their 30-mile cruise and three dragstrip passes are complete. In addition, entry-level racers fit into various classes including Mustang Madness, Open Comp, Nostalgia Street Car, Quick Street and Super Quick, so take a look at the rules and make your plans to come out and race with some of the best muscle car racers in the country. NMCA WEST also runs the track's bracket classes…so if you're a bracket racer please make this a "must race" event.
