2nd Annual JE Pistons NMCA Muscle Car Nationals
Date: Friday, August 15

2nd Annual JE Pistons NMCA Muscle Car Nationals
Presented by Keystone Automotive

Milan, Michigan
August 22-24, 2008
Milan Dragway

The NMCA returns to Milan Dragway for the Second Annual JE Pistons Muscle Car Nationals August 22-24. Last years event was shaping up to be a real slugfest among several Midwest racers who joined NMCA regulars for the only Michigan stop of the Edelbrock Drag Racing Series. The track yielded great numbers during qualifying but eliminations were cancelled due to rain, which ended up soaking the region for more than a week.

Judging from last year’s turnout this year’s race has the makings of something special for both drivers and fans alike. Included again in this year’s program will be the Flowmaster Shootout featuring the top 2007 points earners of Nostalgia Pro Street racing each other for their share of a $4,500 purse in a special eliminator held within qualifying rounds.

Action begins Friday evening with a test session beginning at 3 p.m. followed by a qualifying session beginning at 7:00.

Super Bowl III ROCKS!
Date: Sunday, July 20

Spectacular racing and record crowds helped solidify the Motive Gear NMCA/NMRA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing presented by Nitto Tire as the nation’s largest gathering of heads-up racers. Highlighted by the NMCA’s annihilation of the NMRA in the “Super Bowl” runoff, winning by a margin of eight to three, this year’s event was by far the most competitive of the series’ previous two events held at RT 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.

In the NMCA portion of the event, Mark Micke continued his domination of Scorpion Performance Pro Street with a win over Tony Bischoff after taking a 6.41 to 6.40 holeshot win. In Nitto Tire Super Street 10.5 W Tony Nesbitt stopped Spiro Pappas for his first win in the class by a 7.01 to 7.04 margin.
Jeff Colletta put another tick in the win column for 2008 after overcoming some tough competition, eventually stopping Kevin Parent in a 7.57 to 7.63 affair.
In Vortech Superchargers Extreme Street, Tony Orts, who has not raced in the class since last season used a near tenth of a second holeshot to grab the win in a 8.26 to 8.20 race.
Andy Schmidt stopped Mike DeMayo for his second in of the year in Comp Cams Pro stock with a 8.71 to 8.73 winning pass.
In Car Craft Street Race, Tim Hendricks, who has battled his combination for the past three seasons, finally received the payoff for his undying efforts, when he beat John Macaluso in a 9.02 to 9.00 holeshot win. Don Baskin was another racer who has invested a great deal of time to sort out the combo in his Mustang. He too received the payoff after beating Jeff Swanson in BFGoodrich Tires Mean Street.

A boost control problem led to leaving the line with a ton more power than Pro Street racer Steve Matusek usually uses, resulting in the car almost losing control at 100-feet. Matusek somehow managed to keep the car off the wall and away from Chris Rini. What could have been disaster turned into an eighth-mile driving exercise –with Matusek sawing on the wheel from 100-feet to nearly halftrack.

Steve Miller also had a scary moment after the parachutes on his S-10 failed to open at the conclusion of his final qualifying run. Miller said that the brakes got so hot that one of the carbon-carbon brakes actually welded together, which ultimately led to a brake line failing. Miller ended up driving deep into the sand trap and into the first of two catch fences before the truck finally stopped. Damage was actually minimal and Miller went on to record a first round victory.

For those counting, this year’s rough count of Super Bowl attendance shows a total of 396-cars including an estimated 50 True Street cars. After two years of having the fewer cars, racers of the NMCA now can claim the most cars represented with 178. The NMRA had 168 entries.

Yesterday in Nitto Super Street 10.5W, Jim Robbins ran a stellar 6.91 in the second round of qualifying, which was enough to top Tony Nesbitt’s 6.94. The blower car of Jim Blair and turbo car of Spiro Pappas are also right there with their 6.9X qualifiers. It should be a good show today in Super Street for sure.

Friday News
Date: Friday, July 18

Among the twenty Scorpion Pro Street cars, Dan Bills is in the mix with his brand new twin turbo Cobra. At the first Superbowl of Street Legal Drag Racing back 2006, Bills had a very bad wreck, which halted his drag racing effort for the past three years. We’re glad to report he’s back at it here in Joliet with such a wicked ride. He’s obviously fighting new car issues, but we’re looking forward to seeing it run on Saturday.

Former Vortech Xtreme Street racer Jimmy Byrne is here this weekend running his famed red rocket Mustang in Nitto Super Street. He has shelved his small-block Ford for a 632 BBC to run more local heads-up races in the Midwest. He was able to run an 8-oh in the second round of qualifying, which could be worth a round in eliminations if one of the quicker SS cars makes a mistake on Sunday.

Tony Nesbitt was able to top the field in Nitto Super Street with his sleek nitrous’d Vette with a killer 6.94 in the second round of eliminations. Each race this teams to get quicker and quicker, but have yet to go to the finals in this tough, topnotch category. If Nesbitt and the rest of Team Midnight can keep their performances at that level on Sunday it will spell trouble for the rest of the SS competitors.

Vortech Xtreme Street racer Mike Post is back racing with the NMCA here this weekend. In the off-season he put his car through the 25.5 treatment, including new suspension, tires, and an intake manifold. If he can get it together this weekend he’ll be tough on Sunday.
